Frequently Asked Questions

Do you take commissions?

At this point in time, I am not accepting private or commercial commissions.

Please keep an eye out for updates and further information on my website and social media channels for when commission slots become open.

If you would like a commission, please carefully read the points below before contacting me:

- Please provide me with a commission proposal, with a clear outline of what you would like me to draw or create.  This proposal will need to include the subject matter, size, medium and colour. You are welcome to create a mood board or attach samples of what you have in mind to communicate your ideas. Please bear in mind my specialisms and art style when approaching me, and whether this fits with your commission proposal.

- If you want to send me references to work from, I only accept high resolution reference material (e.g. a good quality photograph of the subject).

- Please supply at least two forms of contact. One of those must be an email address.

- Have a clear budget in mind. I will provide a quote based on my hourly rate, material and P&P costs. Overall price will depend on how complex the artwork is, and the amount of detail and work involved.

- Once the terms are agreed upon, I will ask for a non-refundable deposit of 50% upfront before I commence work. The remaining fee will be paid upon completion of the artwork.

- Commission slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

- Working hours range from 10am - 8pm, Monday to Friday. I rarely work weekends and will respond to messages and e-mails the following Monday.

- I retain the right to decline a commission if I deem the nature of the proposal to be too much or inappropriate.

Do you do collaborations?

I do occasionally take on collaborative work if my schedule allows for it and I feel our styles would work well together.

If you would like to propose a collaboration with me, you can send me a collaboration proposal via the contact page.

I like to ask any collaborators to sign a 'collaboration agreement' contract. This is just to ensure that we are on the same page and to iron out any possible miscommunications or misunderstandings regarding sale of the artwork and how much each of us want to contribute.

Do you do workshops?

Yes I do. If you are interested in me running a workshop at your venue or organisation, please reach me via my contact page to discuss this.

Can I use your art online or on my social media accounts?

You are more than welcome to share, comment and like my posts on social media. I am always thankful for the likes and shares as it helps to promote my artwork and support me as an artist. However, I would kindly ask that you seek permission first when it comes to reposting or downloading my artwork. You can request permission by getting in touch via my contact page. If you do use my art for your profile pictures or banners on social media, please credit and tag me. Reposting my artwork without credit or links to my website or social media accounts does ruin my opportunity to be seen as an artist.

My artwork is not to be used in any sort of advertising, article or publication without express permission from me.

What materials do you use?

I am a traditional media artist, and enjoy using a variety of pens, dip pens, brushes and other mark making tools. I typically work on paper, but have created artwork on a range of surfaces such as board, canvas and scrolls. I have specialised in ink and line art is recent years, but do enjoy using colour pencils and watercolour on occasion.

Do I own the rights to a painting or print when I purchase it?

I retain all rights to all artwork I create. This includes the rights to the image of sold and commissioned original artwork. I retain the right to make reproductions of any and all artwork I create unless the collector has purchased the full or partial rights to the artwork (this is in addition to purchasing the original).

The collector/ buyer may not reproduce the artwork in any way without written permission.

If the artwork ends up being reproduced in a magazine or other media I would like to be credited.

When you purchase an original painting you, the collector, have the right to display the artwork in your home or business but the artwork may not be reproduced without my written permission.

Did you change your name?

Yes I did. I legally changed my name February 2023, and therefore no longer go by Vanessa Knott, but Vanessa Gray. It is ok to call me by my first name, but my artist name (which is actually my third and last name) is Phoenix Gray.
