Meet the Artist

Hello! I’m Vanessa Phoenix Gray

I’m a freelance artist based in the town of Eastbourne (East Sussex, UK). I love depicting creatures and beings from different world mythologies, as well as exploring creature concepts inspired by anime, manga, video game culture, fantasy art and science fiction. My specialism is drawing line art inspired by the art found in comics and cartoons.

The majority of my artwork is geared towards personal projects, but I do collaborate with other creatives, accept commissions, and facilitate artist-led workshops, as well as exhibit at group shows and conventions.

As an artist facilitator, I have worked for The De La Warr Pavilion, The Cartoon Museum and Creative Futures.

I enjoy working with traditional media and tools, but specialise in creating artwork using ink, pens and brushes on paper.

Alongside drawing, I enjoy practising Shodō, the art of Japanese calligraphy.

Before going freelance, I worked as an Activities Coordinator in a Nursing Home.

F.A.Q

  • I certainly do, but at this point in time, I am not accepting private or commercial commissions.

Please keep an eye out for updates and further information on my website and social media channels for when commission slots become open.

If you would like a commission, please carefully read the points below before contacting me:

    - Please provide me with a commission proposal, with a clear outline of what you would like me to draw or create.  This proposal will need to include the subject matter, size, medium and colour. You are welcome to create a mood board or attach samples of what you have in mind to communicate your ideas. Please bear in mind my specialisms and art style when approaching me, and whether this fits with your commission proposal.

    - If you want to send me references to work from, I only accept high resolution reference material (e.g. a good quality photograph of the subject - no AI generated images).

    - Please supply at least two forms of contact. One of those must be an email address.

    - Have a clear budget in mind. I will provide a quote based on my hourly rate, material and P&P costs. Overall price will depend on how complex the artwork is, and the amount of detail and work involved.

    - Once the terms are agreed upon, I will ask for a non-refundable deposit of 50% upfront before I commence work. The remaining fee will be paid upon completion of the artwork.

    - Commission slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    - My working hours do vary, but typically range from 10am - 6pm, Monday to Friday. I rarely work weekends and will respond to messages and e-mails the following Monday.

    - I retain the right to decline a commission if I deem the nature of the proposal to be too much or inappropriate.

  • I do occasionally take on collaborative work if my schedule allows for it and I feel our styles would work well together.

If you would like to propose a collaboration with me, you can send me a collaboration proposal via the contact page.

I like to ask any collaborators to sign a 'collaboration agreement' contract. This is just to ensure that we are on the same page and to iron out any possible miscommunications or misunderstandings regarding sale of the artwork and how much each of us want to contribute.

  • Yes I do. I have an Enhanced DBS, and I am proactively seeking opportunities to work with charities and organisations.

If you are interested in me planning and delivering a workshop, or series of workshops at your venue, cultural organisation or community setting, please reach me via my email. This can be found on my contact page.

Before contacting me, I would kindly ask you to consider the listed points below:

    - Please be clear as to what you require from me as a practitioner . It is good to establish early on venue location, workshop duration, age range, group size, session focus, etc. This can helpful so that I can giving you my rate, plan efficiently, and work with you with desired outcome(s) in mind.

    - Please bear in mind my specialisms when approaching me, and whether this fits with your expectations and outcomes.

    - Do have a clear budget in mind. My rate will depend on the duration of the workshop, the amount of planning and preparation needed, as well as the use of resources and art materials.

    - Once the terms are agreed upon, and the workshop has been delivered, I will send an invoice specific to the project, detailing the session(s) delivered to which the invoice refers.

    - There will be some workshops where it would be beneficial to my business to take photographs or film part of the activity for promotional / work purposes. Permission slips can be given to adults, parents, carers or guardians to read and sign before the workshop starts. If it is workshop for adults, verbal consent will be sought and respected.

  • You are more than welcome to share, comment and like my posts on social media. I am always thankful for the likes and shares as it helps to promote my artwork and support me as an artist.

However, all my images and published works are my intellectual property and are protected by copyright, and so must not be copied or reproduced, in any format, without my consent.

You can request permission by getting in touch via my contact page.

Reposting or using my artwork without consent, credit or links to my website or social media accounts does ruins my opportunity to be seen as an artist.

My artwork is not to be used in any sort of advertising, article or publication without express permission from me.

  • I am a traditional media artist, and enjoy using a variety of pens, dip pens, brushes and other mark making tools. I typically work on paper, but have created artwork on a range of surfaces such as board, canvas and scrolls. I have specialised in ink and line art in recent years, but do enjoy using colour pencils and watercolour on occasion.

  • I retain all rights to all artwork I create. This includes the rights to the image of sold and commissioned original artwork. I retain the right to make reproductions of any and all artwork I create unless the collector has purchased the full or partial rights to the artwork (this is in addition to purchasing the original).

The collector/ buyer may not reproduce the artwork in any way without written permission.

If the artwork ends up being reproduced in a magazine or other media I must be credited.

When you purchase an original artwork, you, the collector, have the right to display the artwork in your home or business but the artwork may not be reproduced without my written permission.

  • Yes I did. I legally changed my name February 2023, and therefore no longer go by Vanessa Knott, but Vanessa Gray. It is ok to call me by my first name, but my ‘artist name’ (which is actually my additional middle name and last name) is Phoenix Gray. I go by Phoenix Gray on my public art social media accounts.
